What time is candle lighting this Friday?
Shabbat candles are lit 18 minutes before sunset on Friday, so the exact time depends on where you are. Use your location or choose a city above for this week's time. In Jerusalem the custom is 40 minutes before sunset.
Why are Shabbat candles lit 18 minutes before sunset?
Shabbat begins at sunset, and lighting candles is the last act before it. Lighting a little early adds time to Shabbat (tosefet Shabbat) and keeps anyone from lighting late. Eighteen minutes is the widespread custom; some communities use 20, 30, or 40 minutes.
When does Shabbat end?
Shabbat ends at nightfall on Saturday, when three small stars are visible. These times use the sun at 8.5° below the horizon. Havdalah, the short ceremony with wine, spices, and a braided candle, marks the end. Some communities wait longer, 50 or 72 minutes after sunset.
What is the blessing over the Shabbat candles?
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat. "Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has made us holy with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat candle." On Yom Tov the ending changes to shel Yom Tov.
How is candle lighting different on Yom Tov?
Candles are lit before sunset on the first night of a festival, as on Shabbat. On the second night, candles are lit after nightfall from an existing flame. When a festival day is followed by Shabbat, candles for Shabbat are still lit before sunset on Friday.
