What is Daf Yomi?

One page, every day, together

At the first world congress of Agudath Israel in 1923, Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin proposed that Jews everywhere learn the same daf, one two-sided page of the Babylonian Talmud, on the same day. The first cycle began that Rosh Hashanah.

A hundred years later, hundreds of thousands follow it: on the train, in shul before Shacharis, on a phone at night. Travel anywhere and someone is on your page.

The Talmud is the Oral Torah written down. If you're not sure how it relates to the Five Books, start with Torah vs. Talmud.

What is today's Daf Yomi?

Today's daf is Bechorot 18 (Tuesday, October 6, US Eastern time). The page updates every day; each daf is one two-sided page of the Babylonian Talmud.

What is Daf Yomi?

Daf Yomi ("page of the day") is a program in which Jews around the world learn the same two-sided page of the Babylonian Talmud each day. Proposed by Rabbi Meir Shapiro in 1923, it covers all 2,711 pages of the Talmud in about seven and a half years.

When does the next Daf Yomi cycle start?

The 14th cycle ends with the Siyum HaShas on June 7, 2027. The 15th cycle begins the next day, June 8, 2027, with Berachot 2. A new cycle is the most natural moment to start.

How long does it take to learn a daf?

Most people spend 30 to 60 minutes on a daf, often with a recorded or live shiur (class). Many beginners start with a shorter overview or summary of the day's page and build up from there.

Can I do Daf Yomi without knowing Aramaic?

Yes. The Talmud is mostly in Aramaic, but full English translations exist, including the free William Davidson edition on Sefaria. Reading the English beside the original is how most people begin.
